Trump orders US government to cut ties with Anthropic Just Hours Before Deadline

That is how the article you posted frames it.

What I read on National Pulse said the impetus for the Pentagon's entreaties was a hypothetical nuclear strike.

And the fact that your article doesn't even mention that?

Let's just say I'm skeptical.
Most reporting, including the sources I linked, emphasizes that the real sticking point was Anthropic’s refusal to remove ethical guardrails on surveillance and autonomous weapons, which applies far beyond a single hypothetical scenario.

The nuclear example may have been used as a hook, but the Pentagon’s broader concern is about having AI they can deploy for any purpose without restrictions. The structural tension over ethics vs access is the underlying story.

Anthropic: “Our product can be used for ai autonomous military attacks … But don’t use it for ai autonomous military attacks or we will not sell it to you!”🤡
Do you really think a private company interested in its own survival would arbitrarily turn down government contracts worth billions of dollars? They turned down a massive economic boon over ethical concerns. Pay attention.

I guess it comes down to who you trust.

I don't trust Reuters.

And I certainly don't trust the Guardian.

Anthropic is lying about the government's motives. Plain and simple.
Why would Anthropic, a company struggling to compete with OpenAI, arbitrarily turn down contracts worth billions of dollars?

I respect their principled stand. Now they can go try to sell their shit elsewhere.

They didn't turn it down.

They got fired.

They literally told the Pentagon they could "have a conversation" if there was ever a nuclear strike.

This was deemed an insufficient response.

And rightfully so.

Anthropic didn’t get fired for refusing to talk about a nuclear strike. They were penalized for taking an ethical stance.

They told the Pentagon they wouldn’t remove safeguards that prevent their AI from being used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. That refusal to fully comply with government demands is exactly why they were flagged as a supply chain risk.

The core issue is ethical limits vs unrestricted government access, and Anthropic was punished for saying no.

Anthropic is not “struggling”. Investors are salivating over the thought of this company going public.
They are not worth nearly as much as OpenAI. When I said struggling I simply meant they are not the biggest players in the market. They have every reason to want to take big contracts and work on bridging that gap, and yet they took a stance against what the government wanted anyway.

Their “ethical stance” does not comport with the military needs. So f-them.

No, they were fired and the Pentagon has already hired someone else instead.

You're behind the eight ball here.

I guess that's what happens when you rely on the TDS Guardian to provide your information.

They were replaced and penalized for taking an ethical stance against the government turning their product into a weapon.
