“The Trump administration has ordered the removal of signs and exhibits related to slavery at multiple national parks, according to four people familiar with the matter, including a historic photograph of a formerly enslaved man showing scars on his back.”

Authoritarian regimes such as Trump’s are motivated by fear – fear of history, facts, and the truth, in this case the truth and facts of America’s past.

And authoritarian regimes such as Trump’s attempt to whitewash America’s racist past in an effort to conceal the regime’s racist present.

They should leave the picture up with a large sign for context that says the Democrats did that to slaves and Republicans ended slavery.

No, the sign should say northerners ended formal slavery except for prison use. 'Freedumb'. Southern Crackers fought to extend it.

Is it fear? Or just pandering to those racists who support him?

The story of the slave "Whipped Peter" contained many fabrications, many of which were not even believed by abolitionists.

Firstly, the Harper's Weekly title "A Typical Negro" was farcical. Slave Peter (also called "Gordon") was bedridden for two months after his lashing. The overseer who whipped him, Artayou Carrier, was summarily dismissed by slave owner John Lyon. No owner, of course, wanted any worker out of commission for two months. The pic certainly did not depict "a typical Negro."

Secondly, it is very possible that Peter's lashing was due to Peter's commandeering a gun and that he "tried to shoot everybody." Peter himself said he "...burned up all my clothes." Peter later claimed he had no memory of these incidents.

Thirdly, William Lloyd Garrison fabricated the story about Peter serving in a particular Union unit that occupied Baton Rouge. Garrison contributed to many myths and even sold photos of Peter to readers of his publication The Liberator.

--------------------------------

The story was certainly not "A Typical Negro," but rather the North's playing up the slavery angle because their early attempts to blatantly steal Southern resources and raw materials did not draw sympathy from typical Northerners or the international community.

Sounds good. Slavery is a horse that has been beat to death. Bored on it. COme back in three generations.

It's not like it was the economic base of the American economy and left unresolved societal legacies.

That's because it wasn't you ******* moron. The railroads and mining are what generated the wealth of this country.

Both endeavors far too dangerous for slaves. So the chinese and the Irish did those jobs.

Slaves picked cotton and tobacco.

That's it for 99% of their production of "wealth".
