I just read an MSNBC story claiming that NATO got what it wanted out of Trump and not the other way around by getting Trump to commit to NATO. Trump was always committed to NATO - as long as they paid their fair share.

1/3 is not bad. Some countries are just not going to be able to do it. Especially if it peaceful then it becomes hard to increase military spending at the expense of local issues.

Bad idea when you want allies. The more the better. Just because they cannot afford a large military budget is no reason to deny them entry.

Trolling OP aside, this is a major change. If NATO really did this their combined militaries would dwarf Russia. Poland's spending jumped to about that level and now has more tanks and artillery on order than anyone else in Europe IIRC.

In Poland's defense (pardon the pun), they always did. Unlike the Nazis they beat the USSR in a war.
I would suggest the Baltic states should form one unitary military so as not to get picked off by the Russians.

5% is difficult though for capitalist/Democratic countries. We are not at 5%.
EDIT: It will be interesting to see the drone revolution in a decade and what has happened. There are strong arguments that the era of $100MM fighters is over.
