Russification was actually a Stalin thing, and ironic since he was a Georgian.
Stalin put a stop to ukrainization, very stupid thing when russian population, which was part of Ukraine, was forced to speak and write in Ukrainian. The population did not like this. This Ukrainization came to an end.
Although Ukrainian language and literature were taught in schools in Ukraine, Russian was also taught as the language of international communication in the country. There were 100 nationalities living in the USSR. What language do you think they should have spoken among themselves at work or in the army?
There were also schools in Ukraine where teaching was conducted in Ukrainian. There were two or three of them in the city where I lived.
Who needs the Ukrainian language if you can leave after school to study and work on the other side of the country?
