The modern Republican Party was molded by and a response to the Cold War. Fervently anti-communist the Republican platform was one the stood for greater defense,spending, law and order and sniffing out communist infiltration in government and popular culture.

And today we see Trump has pulled that party out of its natural orbit and into the zany world outlook he embraces.

Republicans were nice deficit hawks, they railed against big government and bitched about spending. Republicans were,once Free traders who recognized the old axiom 'nations that trade with each other don't shoot at each other'.
