I'm not sure if this counts, but I spent three days in St Petersburg on a cruise a few years back. It was fabulous, with the highlights being the Hermitage (art museum) and the Czar's Summer palace.
We got very little opportunity to interact with natives (other than our tour guide who was excellent), but I'm an architecture freak and I was blowed away, so to speak. Especially with the way that the major churches had been lovingly restored after the collapse of the USSR.
