Already been done over fifty years ago. NASA developed the Lunar Rover in their compound near White Sands Missile Range, NM in the late sixties. It was used during the lunar missions.

I want a range of 1000 miles. It is easy to cover 500 miles in eight hours on a freeway--Sacto to Las Vegas and I want to be able to get around town after I get there.
 
Kind of looks like the Lazer tank from Space 1999...

The two are orders of magnitude different.

My guess would be straight carbon fiber. Super strong, super lightweight, probably with a super thin lead alloy sheathing for radiation protection.
