The course itself is 7350 yards long. FYI that is over 4 miles long. The 6th hole is the only one that lies along that fence and the other holes are obscured. Where he was about the only place he could see his target and that was limited. He was discovered long before he could have taken a shot.

At 1:30 AM there are less people out and about, and he was less likely to be discovered. That's why he went at that time. I do know the layout of the course and the street borders the 6th hole all along its length. I did Google it after I saw it on TV.

His mistake was not camouflaging his barrel but had it sticking out where it was easily seen.
