at least in Germany …

Never heard of it. I was surrounded by Catholics as a child and they all took their decorations down randomly soon after Christmas.

Just took down half of them the wind last night took care of the rest...:45:

where the day is called ….. Mariä Lichtmess
.

The day we get our candles and other sacramentals blessed. Thanks for reminding me. I have salt, chalk and Miraculous Medals to be blessed.

today is Candlemas!

I wasn't familiar with the practice but it sounds like a subset of what we call Epiphanytide! An observance within the greater observance. Epiphanytide takes us all the way through to the Mardi Gras leading into Lent.

Candlemas used to be end of Christmas time

Well, after the Octave of Christmas and Christmastide comes Epiphanytide usually starting after the 12th day of Christmas. Then that carries one into Lent which ends with Easter. Apparently Candlemas is a daily celebration much like many within Christmastide but more popular in some parts of the world like France and Germany.

It sounds like a nice idea.

Never heard of it. It didn't even come up in my research a few years ago when I studied the whole Christmas holiday.

Apparently it is a custom local to western Europe.

15th post
Candlemas was very important once

Also for the farming year in Europe
.

I find many of the Feast Days, including some of the name days, to be like a calendar of the natural year. Very important to the farmers, of which there are MANY in my parish.
