Yes, creatures do manage to exist in zero water environments on Earth...
 
I'm not certain what to make of the OP title. Species are made extinct, not individual animals. There are not thousands of species of penguins. And though some penguin species are at risk, I do not think the death of thousands would push any of them over the edge. Closer, yes, but not over.

Don't get me wrong, I think this event is a biological calamity, but I suspect more casualties resulted when the Antarctic ice shelves began collapsing, particularly among those populations that migrate seasonally.
