Tipping might be a common practice in America today but, in truth, there are occasions when some are reluctant to do so.

Now, one woman in Washington State is taking a stand after a trip to a local Subway. She explained how, at first, their visit to a branch of the popular sandwich shop franchise had been normal enough.

"My husband and I each ordered a pretzel and my two nieces each ordered a foot long sub sandwich," she said. "I am the only one who got a drink, which they promptly handed me an empty cup and a straw to fill myself."

It was only when it came time to pay that the woman noticed something that did not sit well with her. "When we checked out they added an automatic 20 percent tip which equaled $8.51".

The woman was furious and demanded immediate action. "I was indignant and made them remove the tip," she said. The woman said she told a member of staff: "I do not tip where I have to stand to order my food, get my own drink, and clean up after myself."

How many of you would have paid the 20%?

I live in WA. CA is in the same boat. Those employees get $20/hr. When the state raised the minimum wage, the prices of those products were increased to cover the higher labor costs. When the gov't mandated that wage, my usual tips of 15-20% were immediately reduced to 5-10% which is not figured on tax or alcohol.

To answer the asked question at the end of this message, for me, it would depend on how much 20% would actually be. I'd like to know how much food was actually being ordered because the more you get, the more you have to pay anyway. For me it would also depend on how polite and respectful the workers are to me. I do have one question though. When did a tip become as much as 20%? I thought that 15% is what a tip is.

God bless you always!!!

Tipping is voluntary. I once heard that TIPS was an acronym for "To Insure Prompt Service."

Just last Monday that would be the 8th of June I took in the Golden Corral Buffet & was charged $13.00 & change(senior discount) for all I could eat, including coffee refills. With that low of cost I can easily afford a $5.00 tip which is what I handed to the young gal before I vacated my seat. A MANDATORY tip is another story plus it most likely will be taxed as income. A five in cash is non taxable, the way it should be. On top of everything else it lets the person that is tipped KNOW that they are doing a fine job meaning they KNOW that they are APPRECIATED.

If U R ever in the Spokane area here are the directions to the GCB(U won't regret it!)

I never tip in a place like that. Employees do a minimum of things for the customer. On the other hand I tip very well for good service in a sit-down restaurant.

Shame on you for directing people to drive on Division. LOL. If you like good Mexican food, there is a great new family owned place on Hwy 2 in Elk. Los Tres Potrillos (The Three Colts). Say Hi to Hector when he greets you on arrival.

Certainly not me. Tipping is an insult in most countries, they actually pay their employees a living wage, and these past few years, menial unskilled workers are now making what people used to need advanced degrees to make.

Tipping is for service, over and above GOOD service, voluntarily, not as a means supplanting the basic wage of a worker doing his essential job to save the employer money.

But I would never go to Subway now, their prices are up 70% from what they were just a few years ago. Adding a tip now is just for stupid people.

Wait, so you tip in a fast food joint?

20% became the standard as soon as they began to feel entitled.

Tipping should not be necessary let alone mandated at a fast food place that just doesn’t make any sense.

On the other hand tipping should be for traditional things like if you’re tipping the barber, pizza delivery guy or your waiter who is serving you food at a sit down restaurant.
