This mayor wants to publicize who’s on welfare and where they live

I think there are too many on benefits that don't belong on them but I don' see the point in doing this. It serves no purpose, the ones that need it will be hurt and the ones that don't won't care

From what I can tell, he's been raising the issue of where tax dollars go for years.

I applaud that.

This will never happen......

But if you read the article...you see that there are places like Kansas limiting what people can do on our dime.

I think there should be a lot more limiting at what they can spend it on. When I see a young couple struggling to pay for things at the store and then some welfare rat buying expensive shit with EBT it infuriates me

I can recall when they first moved to consolidate all the welfare onto one "credit card". People were going to be getting 3 to 4 K a month.

Doesn't the left have more to worry about than Lewiston, Maine's welfare list?
Oh, we worry about plenty of things, like causing you guys to be butthurt over gay marriage.

No, I think it's the gays butts who hurt after they get married.

Don't you have classes ?

Or did you fail out already ?
:blahblah:

I'll take that as a yes.

Clearly you failed your critical thinking and debate classes.

They should have red shirts for sexual predators, orange for other felons and purple for families with dependent children.

This mayor is a moron.
This mayor wants to publicize who’s on welfare and where they live
If you receive government assistance in the state of Maine, Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald thinks the public has a right to know about it.

In a Thursday column for the Twin City Times, Macdonald said a bill will be submitted during Maine’s next legislative session“asking that a Web site be created containing the names, addresses, length of time on assistance and the benefits being collected by every individual on the dole.”

He added: “After all, the public has a right to know how its money is being spent.”

Proposals to target welfare recipients and reform assistance programs have become lightning rods for broader discussions on how the poor are treatedand how taxpayer dollars are used.

Kansas lawmakers received both national criticism and praise this summer after approving a law limiting how people in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program can use their benefits. And at least 13 states have some sort of drug testing laws for public public assistance applicants or recipients.

[Kansas bans welfare recipients from seeing movies, going swimming on government’s dime]

Macdonald, a local Republican mayor who is up for reelection in November, can’t submit a state bill himself, so he would need a state lawmaker to back the plan in the legislature.

In his column Thursday, he wrote that Maine has a Web site listing the pension amounts individuals receive — something “taxpayers have a right to know,” he said — and wondered why welfare recipients’ information isn’t also publicly posted.

“The answer: our liberal, progressive legislators and their social-service allies have made them a victimized, protected class,” Macdonald wrote. “It’s none of your business how much of your money they get and spend. Who are you to question it? Just shut up and pay!”
A hateful, reprehensible moron.

Hey, your employer and benefactor has your home address, right Sassy! And who are these peoples benefactors? TAXPAYERS, that is who/whom.

My employer has my address. But they have no business posting it for the whole company to see. Likewise, the government already has the addresses of those receiving assistance. They have no business posting it for the rest of the world to see.

I was on food stamps once. I didn't get public assistance because the monthly dole was $85 for single men, and if you lived in the county shelter they'd dock you $25.

Times were tough and I had real drug problems.

I've worked through all that, and am now a productive member of society, have paid my debts, and help other addicts/alchoholics in recovery.

At the time, I would have been quite embarassed to have my name published where everyone I grew up with would see. On the other hand, they didn't need a posting of my food stamp usaage to know I was all messed up.

At any rate...it would be interesting to see if this actually helps anyone.

For this to be justified, the people trying to get it implemented would have to hope that it would cause people to change for the better, or stop abusing government programs.

I have my doubts, the very likely conservative proponents of this program have pure motives to help people.

Your employer is not the government Welfare is not a paycheck. just as the taxpayers have a right to know which government contractors are recieving government payments, it has a right to know anyone else who is recieving checks from the government, especially when they are not rendering any service or product in exchange.

The poor need to be shamed so they don't enjoy being poor so much

Only through suffering and humiliation will the poor give up their ways

Two wrongs do make a right you know.

Heap more suffering and humiliation onto the suffering and humiliation inherent to poverty, and you've got a negative cancelling a negative, to make zero.

Poor people on welfare should have a "W" tattooed on their foreheads for all to see. Let's just humiliate them to the max!

My instant reaction is that I agree with publicizing their name and amount of assistance they're getting. Not so comfortable about putting out their address.
