Not to give Putin too much credit but if partition is the goal then it makes sense to control such resources. That way you keep the western part submissive after a peace deal is reached and it does explain why Russia went in so light in the north.

Anyone who didn't understand that this was the plan from the beginning is a fool... although I do believe the plan was also to take Kiev then trade it back in exchange for some easing of sanctions. Perhaps Russia has enough territory to successfully negotiate now...I don't know. Time will tell.
