Scientists create breakthrough recipe to grow insulin-secreting cells by the billions

So, it looks like stem cell research brings another disease to the brink of a cure:

The discovery described in the journal Cell on Thursday and led by stem cell researcher Douglas Melton is a method of growing billions of precious insulin-secreting cells en masse using human stem cells. Patients could receive a single transplant with the newly generated cells, which would have the ability to read out the amount of sugar in the blood and squirt out just the right amount of the hormone insulin.

So, for anyone who still gets a case of the wiggens over stem cell research, and the origin of those stem cells, get over your selves. Stem cells, and stem cell research is saving lives, and has the potential to do so much more.

Yes, adult stem cell research is very promising.

LOL. I like how you subtly added that little qualifier in there. "...adult"..." Guess what? Stem cells are stem cells. It really doesn't matter from whence they were harvested.

well by golly. who the hell doesn't support stem reaserch

well go get knocked up and abort a couple babies to donate to it
don't come on here preaching to people little child. grow the hell up

Actually, it apparently does...since embryonic stem cells tend to create cancers while adult stem cells produce actual cures....as they seem to have done here...

excuse me....I meant dead baby stem cells...

Why Embryonic Stem Cells Are Obsolete - US News

The report describes a young boy with a fatal neuromuscular disease called ataxia telangiectasia, who was treated with embryonic stem cells. Within four years, he developed headaches and was found to have multiple tumors in his brain and spinal cord that genetically matched the female embryos used in his therapy.

His experience is neither an anomaly nor a surprise, but one feared by many scientists. These still-mysterious cell creations have been removed from the highly ordered environment of a fast-growing embryo, after all. Though they are tamed in a petri dish to be disciplined, mature cells, research in animals has shown repeatedly that sometimes the injected cells run wildly out of control—dashing hopes of tiny, human embryos benignly spinning off stem cells to save grown-ups, without risk or concern.

To date, most of the stem cell triumphs that the public hears about involve the infusion of adult stem cells. We've just recently seen separate research reports of patients with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis benefiting from adult stem cell therapy. These cells have the advantage of being the patient's natural own, and the worst they seem to do after infusion is die off without bringing the hoped-for benefit. They do not have the awesome but dangerous quality of eternal life characteristic of embryonic stem cells.

I'm so glad you asked that question, Stephanie.

Most in GOP field would scale back stem cell funding

Now, admittedly, that story is a couple of yearsw old. However, most of the Modern Republican party hasn't really changed its opinion on funding stem cell research.

Did that help clear up the question for you?

You're a LIAR. Bush Ok'd some embryonic stem cell research. so stop already with your lies. You think we are all stupid on here? think again. and how others feels about it IS none of your business

I am too, Stephanie....conservatives support adult stem cell research 1) because it doesn't involve killing one human being to save another and 2) adult stem cells don't create cancers while embryonic stem cells do...

We go for the least harm and the most help...without having to fool ourselves into believing there isn't a horrible cost when you use embryonic stem cells...

Yes, the qualifier makes all the difference.

Stem cells are stem cells. It really doesn't matter from whence they were harvested.

Sounds like you're not up to date on stem cell research. Figures.

And again, the democrats never tire of trying to smear the republicans...since power is everything to them, they will use any opportunity...even medical research to falsely smear republicans...

Are Republicans Against Stem Cell Research
Yet, it's not as clear cut as they want you to believe. Instead, Republicans may have been victims of a smear campaign rather than being called out for objective science fact. I did a survey of 67,692 news releases about studies over the last 4 years and found 178 releases on adult stem cell research while embryonic stem cells were the subject of 460 releases - 2.6 times as many releases about hESCs as there were adult stem cells.

Yet the titles tell a different story. Only 20 percent of titles mentioned when the stem cells were adult - adult being a cell that can aid in repair of the tissue it came from (brain, heart, etc.) whereas embryonic stem cells are still being researched but can differentiate into potentially any kind of cell - despite the fact that adult stem cells have been researched and improving lives for over 50 years. No Republican campaign platform has objected to bone marrow transplants, after all, but if Republicans were anti-science or anti-stem-cells, they certainly would have. In contrast to adult stem cell studies, a majority of titles about hESC potential mentioned it specifically. Intentionally or not, adult stem cell research was being lumped in with hESC research, making it seem like hESC research was already helping to cure people despite the restriction.

lol, science 20. com

well I guess they have a mighty crystal ball to know how all REPUBLICANS feels on this topic

The problem with your position is that your "evidence" is anecdotal - one single research project with a very specific set of parameters. Also, the very reason that there hasn't been more success with the use of embryonic stem cells is because moralists like you keep blocking the funding for broad spectrum stem cell research. You are, in fact, hindering science in the name of your theological opinions.

And you are in the minority. 68% of Americans support the use of embryonic stem cells in research. Even the NIH disagrees with you:

Although additional research is needed, iPSCs are already useful tools for drug development and modeling of diseases, and scientists hope to use them in transplantation medicine. Viruses are currently used to introduce the reprogramming factors into adult cells, and this process must be carefully controlled and tested before the technique can lead to useful treatments for humans. In animal studies, the virus used to introduce the stem cell factors sometimes causes cancers. Researchers are currently investigating non-viral delivery strategies.

But, thank you for playing.

Scientists Show Stem Cells Don t Cause Cancer - ABC News

n November, two groups of researchers -- one in Japan and one in the United States -- showed that adult human and mouse skin cells could be reprogrammed into stem cells similar to embryonic stem cells, which can be made into any type of cell. These cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), could be the key to using stem cells to cure a variety of diseases.
In this latest study, published in the Feb. 14 issue of Science, the Japanese researchers prove these stem cells are made from normal mature adult cells, and they show that these stem cells can be implanted using a retrovirus without fear of causing cancer.

"This is a real nice follow-up and confirmation of the previous papers that looked at inducing normal cells to become stem cells," said Dr. Hugh Taylor, an associate professor at Yale University School of Medicine.

abc news now

from one propaganda to another

some people are against USING embryonic stem cells for reasearch. And they don't have to be republican, independent, democrat, space alien

what's sick here, is you freaks freak over them doing experiments on animals yet puts others down for being against this.

twisted hypocrites

Cool, why is Government money (tax dollars) needed? I wouldn't invest in it if I knew billions were going freely to my competitors of whom never need to actually make anything of value.

Cool, why is Government money (tax dollars) needed?

Because embryonic stem cell research helps to promote abortion...and the left wants the government to be part of that process...

That seems like a bias answer, possibly containing no factual information of any sort.

Are people purposely terminating pregnancy to donate or sell a fetus to stem cell research?

I Wonder if the op has? If not they can keep their snobby preaching to themselves

Not now, as far as I know, but that is the concern...creating babies to kill them for their stem cells...since there are people who don't consider babies babies until 26 weeks there would be a financial insentive to babies for stem cells...
