This is how things were........

.......before the Crazy came to town.

Steve King removed from committee assignments following racist comments

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa has been removed from committee assignments following racist remarks, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced Monday, the latest development in bipartisan condemnation of King’s recent interview that appeared to lament that the term “white supremacist” is considered offensive.

McCarthy announced that the House Republican Steering Committee – which oversees committee assignments – met Monday night and made a decision that King “will not be serving on committees in this Congress.”

Back then, which wasn't so long ago, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy punished Steve King because King was viewed as a political liability. McCarthy realized if the party did not disassociate itself from King it would cost it votes.

This is how things are now.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar land Oversight committee assignments after removal by Democrats

These days, Repub House members who suggest fellow members should be killed, make videos of themselves killing House members, or indicate a belief in a delusional fantasy, are rewarded with plum committee assignments. No longer is there fear such outrages will cost the POT votes. Punishable behavior is a feature, not a bug, in the new POT.

And then there's this guy.........

TRUMP: 30,573 lies.

SANTOS: Hold my beer.

Now there is the train of thought that putting the likes of Gosar, Greene, Boebert, and Scott Perry on the high-visibility Oversight Committee may not be such a bad thing after all for America.

To be sure, any witness going before them is subject to histrionic screeching and fake outrage by one or more or all of 'em. Elections have consequences ....and one of 'em is screechers may get an opportunity to go all 'howler monkey' on witnesses they don't like.
Understood. There's a long tradition of that.

However, that very screechiness makes for effective eyeball-bait for news outlets of both the Leftfield and the Rightfield. So there's an undeniable ramping up of 'exposure'.....of ramping up the risk of looking screechy and unserious.

Rightfield newsies will say: "See how Green tore into that Democrat appointee....Boy, she nailed him good. All Democrats are just like that guy. "

Leftfielders will say: "See how Greene went all howler-monkey on that government bureaucrat who was just trying to do his job. She's a hysterical non-serious nut-job. Too many of the GOP are like that."

In short, putting well recognized nut-jobs on the Committee runs the real risk of making the whole Committee look like a circus. An unserious Congressional effort.

In contrast, putting serious minded moderate members with a reputation for gravitas and due-diligence......adds credibility to the Committee.

In short, did Kevin McCarthy just sabotage the effectiveness of this Oversight Committee?

Republicans have been to stoic and to nice compared to Progs at meetings. Maxine Waters was running the Financial Committee! Many reasons why the nation is screwed up.
