Of course Putin will put support behind the weakest candidate for a country they aren't buddy buddy with. America is a big roadblock for Russia and they have been chest bumping on and off for decades, they aren't hated enemies but certainly are very tenious and shaky allies. Russia would prefer to the weaker leader for us.
