The UK has now also announced impending formal recognition of a Palestinian State in September. Personally, I think this is an appalling violation of international law and Israel should fight it with everything they have in the legal arena.

In his statement, Starmer made the following demands on Israel in order to prevent this recognition:

• end military operations in Gaza
• agree to a ceasefire
• commit to peace
• commit to a two-state solution
• allow the UN (and Hamas) to deliver aid in Gaza
• guarantee there are no annexations of the "West Bank"

Regardless of whatever else I feel about Netanyahu and his government, he is not one to be bullied, so I think this is a silly exercise all around.

But cheeky me, being cheeky me, wonders is there is a way to play this. What if Israel jumped the gun on France and UK and before September recognized the State of Palestine. Of course, this would mean that Israel determines the borders and takes whatever portion of the "West Bank" and Gaza it feels is necessary to protect Israel's citizens. Israel formally renounces all claim to what remains of Palestine. Israel also offers a peace treaty with an option to mutually re-negotiate the borders. Permanent residents would have the option to leave (and denied re-entry) or to become Israeli citizens.

Now, before you all jump on me. This is just a thought experiment. I know its never going to happen.
