There are many tentacles in our government. Some may cross into each party. it took many years for this to happen. There were murmurs and attempts to cut the fat 40 years ago. They did a little. It was estimated to be 25% to 33% of the budget. We waste.

It was about forty years ago that the federal debt went over a trillion dollars for the first time.

In my opinion the budget reform must include all spending programs equally
That means the military and Medicare must do their share along with everything else

No! If we cut one penny from the budget, we are all gonna die!
The USA is just too broke to afford a single cut in spending!

At the time when it was near or around 1.2 trillion dollars it was said they could cut around 300 billion dollars from waste. If the same percentages are similar held to today if the federal budget is around 6 trillion somewhere around 1.5 to 2 trillion dollars if it is 25% to 33%. Only minor cuts were ever made, and deficits grew a little.

And here we are forty years later with the debt growing about a trillion dollars a year average. I think government austerity programs are LONG overdue.

Even limiting increases in Social Security is political suicide. The best that can be done is raising the full retirement age.
