Both sides have a flawed concept of freedom. Modern liberals more so.
But nonetheless, they don't know what freedom is when they are constantly trying to take freedom away from each other.
I see. Just like everything else. Each side claims the other side is corrupt and lying to the people, and so, as you see it, each side is infringing on citizens' liberty, because the flawed sense of freedom has somehow infused into the partisan cultures.
It is because the construction of the government is flawed. If there is any error in the construction of the government, it is going to adversely affect the evolution of the government and subsequent society. It cycles, and snowballs, in the election campaigns, and now, a tremendously expanded political pundit industry exaggerates political issues for commercial gains.
The founding of the USA was adequate for the sophistication of the era, and for many decades beyond; but ultimately, there are inadequacies in the system that are exploited as corruption. Since the beginning the election of 1800 was an exploitation of an inadequacy. There have been adjustments meant to correct things (Amendment 12, 17, limit seats in the House), but ultimately they have adversely affected the checks and balances that were inadequate in the first place.
Political partisanship cannot be avoided - it has to be properly exercised with adequate segregation. Like the old adage, "one man's junk is another man's treasure," so is freedom is another's oppression.
The American experiment was the union of different states - the experiment failed, because the government operations were never correctly adjusted for the expansion of government and diversity of the sophisticated population.
