Comets don't stop in midair, so we know it's not a comet.
What I find strange is that Kings had astronomers. Yet, they didn't report an anomaly to Herod. Could there have been a star, that because of the curvature of the earth, could be seen in the east and not in the west?

The Greek word translated as star means any of the astral bodies spread across the heavens. Imo, it was a bright object of unknown composition.
