Reports of a comet are found in Chinese records from 5 B.C.E., according to research published on December 3 in the Journal of the British Astronomical Association and written by Mark Matney, a planetary scientist at NASA, who conducted the research independently of the agency.

Matney recalls how, as a student, he worked at a planetarium that ran a Christmas sky show telling the story of the Star of Bethlehem, which rose in the southern sky until it appeared to come to a stop overhead. The planetarium show said that no known astronomical object could act in the way described by the story of the magi—Earth’s rotation means that everything in the sky rises in the east and sets in the west.

“I remember sitting there saying, ‘Oh, I know one that could do that,’” Matney says. He suspected that a long-period comet from the mysterious Oort Cloud, which lies far beyond the planets of our solar system, could be the key.

Not a sign from God

Either God is God, or He is not.

If He is beholden to the particularities of nature--and not omnipotent over them--that's not the God Christians worship.

Its a comet. Christians worship an idol named Jesus.

Who were easily manipulated. Thats like saying to the people during an eclipse worship me and I will bring back the sun

Well, I'm no Christian expert but it seems to me it would be quite easy for God the Almight to whip up a comet if He needed to.

Why can't he timing of an unusual natural event can't be a sign from God? The earthquake and resulting tsunami that destroyed the Minoan civilization is thought to be the cause of the parting of the Red Sea. Does that make it any less of a miracle?

What is "the Star of Bethlehem". No such thing in my Bible.

Those who want to tear down Christianity continue to find these theories and opinions of this and that to do that.

Shame on those who try to shake the faith of others. It is fine to theorize on whether the Star of Bethlehem was allegory or whether it was a comet or super nova or whatever.

A miracle by natural means is no less a miracle. Certainly God used natural phenomenon for miracles. But do not commit the evil of trying to take away the faith of believers by suggesting a natural phenomenon means God didn't do it.

No, they worship a man who actually existed and who may, or may not be God.

I dont think it tears down Christianity. It adds some reality and questions the dogma. If you dont question your beliefs then youre afraid to do it. Thats a lack of faith. Dont you question why people who choose not to follow Jesus must go to hell and suffer. Thats arrogant and primitive.

Dogma is created by man as a means of control.

Has nothing to do with faith, and those who believe it.

When Christians invented original sin and hell that was a threat to compel obedience. What kind of Fn religion is that. Thats also un American
