Progressivism as we know it today didn't even exist in the general population until the late 70s, and Democrats didn't truly embrace it until the late 90s(although I would argue that Democrats were never really progressive and strictly became an anti traditional, anti western, anti white, anti male, anti Christian, anti rural party that has gotten away with it by committing treason and allowing Mexico to invade the country)

In the Second half of the 20th century, whites in the South shared much of the same beliefs of today's conservatives. They were mostly Christians, fiscal conservatives, opposed to welfare, had no use for the federal government, and were strong supporters of states rights.

In the 60's, southern whites broke with northern democrats over the segregation. Slowly they drifted away from the Democratic party, first supporting Republican candidates only in national elections, then state elections. The movement away from the Democrat party by white voters in the South has been dramatic. In the mid 20th century practically all Southern state legislatures and governors were Democrats. Today all southern legislatures are controlled by Republicans and all but one governor is a Republican.

Democrats could have gotten the white rural, southern and working class back, but they decided instead to become the largest hate group in the world and rely on destroying American demographics to win elections.
