To call 19 century people “conservatives“ or “progressive“ has no meaning if you intend to compare them to today’s conservative and progressive ideas. The Republican party opposed to slavery, but they did not advocate integrated school or racially mixed marriages or transgender playing women’s sports.

If you are looking for similarities to political parties of that era and the same parties today, you need to look no further than modern Democrats constant emphasis on race.

Like today’s Democrats, Democrats of the mid 1800s insisted on an entirely race-based society. Race was always the first consideration, not merit, not accomplishments, not character, not the individual. Democrats believe that when the party first formed in the 1700s and they still believe it to this day.

Both before, and for decades after the Civil War, the race card was the Trump card of the Democrats. Today it is more of a bluff, but surprisingly successful.

Until now.

Yes. This is why it is not a good argument to point out that the KKK and the slavery apologists were Democrats. That's true, but the Democrats were the conservatives in the South in those days. A more accurate statement is to say that the KKK and the slavery apologists were the conservatives of their day.
