Yep.. The US government.

And they are IGNORING their own ugly environmental disasters AGAIN...

While the EPA is declaring CO2 a pollutant ---

6 nuclear-waste tanks leaking at Hanford | Local News | The Seattle Times

At least six underground-storage tanks each holding tens of thousands of gallons of nuclear and chemical waste are leaking at the Hanford nuclear reservation, the nation’s most contaminated Cold War weapons-production facility.

And federal officials say more of the aging steel waste tanks also may be dribbling out nuclear material left over from a half-century of atomic bomb-building.

Suzanne Dahl, who oversees Hanford’s tank-waste issues for the state, said it is too soon to say where, precisely, the radioactive material has gone, but that it would take many years for the waste to work its way to the groundwater that moves toward the Columbia River 5 miles away.

“Is it held up directly underneath the tank farms? Is it moving? It’s something we just don’t know at this point,” Dahl said. “We do know that there is 150 to 200 feet of dry soil between the tanks and the groundwater.”

There's a "shovel ready" job.. Soon --- Please.. The CO2 killing fields can wait..

Then how about working for some funding of the cleanup project. Every time there is a budget cut, they cut the budget of the cleanup. And it is the GOP that pushes the budget cuts for this kind of problem. And it is the GOP that flaps-yap against the science that the rest of the world fully understands.

We were fighting two differant huge wars when I was born. We can both take care of the mess at Hanford and address the issue of maintaining energy while drastically decreasing our emissions of GHGs.

The scary part is there is going to be more and more similar troubles in the years to come. Now we aren't making as many "nukes" and we certainly aren't using any of them, and we aren't making a great many new nuclear power plants, all that material has to go somewhere, and now we have other countries wanting to go nuclear... It's going to get a lot worse before it gets any better.

Another reason for the AGW BS. To keep us from talking about real problems like this.

Yes oldsocks blame it all on the GOP.. Even though the buildup and ensuing waste leftover happened while both parties had power,it's got to be the GOP's fault...

Seriously dude, you're impossible to take seriously when you're this bias and transparent..

Both parties are guilty of letting this go unresolved. When you blame one party for the problem you only insure that the problem with go unresolved for a longer period of time.

The National Nuclear Waste project at Yucca wasn't cut "just for funding". There was no interest. This clean-up OUGHT to come out of the MASSIVE DOD budget.. Just like it would if a particular CORPORATION did it. How can the military just walk away from all these weapons sites and leave it to some other agencies to pick up their poop?

It's NOT a GOP problem. It's a political hot potato. The DEMS stand to lose if Yucca Mtn is completed because it will remove objections about nuclear waste and they'd have to get off their asses and start allowing new licenses.

MEANWHILE -- the EPA is screwing around with CO2 as the main threat to humanity when 4 or 5 of America's major rivers have govt nuclear sewage headed for them..

You and your warmist minions have sucked the LIFE out of environmental discussion in this country and NOBODY'S doing the basics anymore...

No, GSlack, I blamed the GOP for the present lack of funds for the cleanup. As for the past sins, they are from both parties and also the military. A great many people making decisions on things in complete ignorance. The original tanks are single layer carbon steel. And when they had nuclear waste to dispose of, they put them in the tanks without the slightest research into the chemical reactivity of what was already in there, or the reactivity of the daughter elements.

And you are totally full of shit. Both the problems of global warming and the nuclear waste can be addressed. But it will require money. A lot of money. And both will create much damage if not addressed.

It will take WAY more than money.

Horseshit--the democrats have their own piles of sacred moolah that they won't part with in order to clean up anything.

Who are "they"?

Seriously, you're blaming a political party for it all. A political party which you haven't established as being in charge when the decisions you claimed were made... Wouldn't the scientists and engineers involved be at least as much to blame as a political party who may not have even been in charge of it?

Or maybe, there is no one to blame? Ever think that perhaps they might have been going by their current understanding and level of knowledge? Maybe there was not other viable alternative at the time?

MAYBE, some greenpeace-like group would have had a sacred cow over something like a lead lined metal barrel? You know how bad lead is for the environment, but still the best substance we have against radiation?

You ding-dongs, are so full of party rhetoric you can't see anything else...

Nation's biggest polluter? Air Farce ONE when it's hauling around Michelle Obama's fat ass?

it's a horrifying engineering problem, cleaning it up. They've got gobs of plutonium, mixed with every other radioactive isotope in the periodic table. The stuff is physically hot, chemically caustic, and too radioactive for people to get near. And it's present as liquid, as sludge, as salt cake, as hard scale. Scrape the stuff too hard, you puncture the tanks.

Somehow, that all has to be piped along and vitrified. Do it wrong, form a clog somehow, and it's possible for enough plutonium to mush together to go critical, creating a fine dirty bomb. Hence, they move real carefully.

Why little to no funding for clean coal technology? Because it's easier just to put an axe to all hydrocarbons and destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs. Blame the Democrats.

BTW - if the government itself is the largest polluter, then Agriculture can't be far behind. They continually get an "Advance to Boardwalk" card AND are allowed to skip on along to GO... and collect.

Won't even look at the OP...Honest injun.

It's the Defense Department, innit?

Extra Credit for the extra effort.. I badly wanted to justify my "hysterical" OP. But figured it would derail the seriousness of a nuclear sludge leak near a major river..

But since you brought it up --- Yes.. You are the winner...

But that's not all.. TVA is one of the largest owners of coal plants in the country.. And although a lot of that is sold off --- it's still an asset of the Fed govt.

The U.S. government is the fourth biggest greenhouse gas polluter in the country | News with Tags

The Political Economy Research Institute published this list of greenhouse gas emitters. It’s based on the 2011 data from the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. The three top polluters on the list are power companies — American Electric Power, Duke Energy Corp., and Southern Co.

The fourth is the U.S. government, responsible for more than 1 entire percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Part of the reason the government ranks so high is that it’s also a power company. Top on the list of its polluting properties is the TVA’s Paradise Fossil plant, a coal-fired power plant. And the government is trying to clean up its act, it really is:

In support of recent environmental agreements and its vision of being one of the nation’s leading providers of low-cost and cleaner energy by 2020, TVA will upgrade the performance of the scrubbers on Paradise units 1 and 2 by Dec. 31, 2012. These scrubbers were originally installed in the early 1980s.

Hung by their own petards ----- again.. Hey "Bama".. You should clean up your own yard before you go criticizing others eh??

Love how the WORST form of pollution is now CO2.. Nobody even TALKS about the stuff that really affects your health anymore..
