Trump is viewed by vast numbers of people outside of the GOP as an existential threat to American representative democracy.

Operating under that (well-founded) belief, the gloves come off, and all that can be done within the law IS being done.

Eventually, the media and most people came to feel the same way about Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin back in the 50s.

Unlike Trump, McCarthy did not summon, incite and aim an Insurrectionist mob against the Congress of the United States.

But the two of them have much in common with Benedict Arnold or Vidkun Quisling or Pierre Laval or Judas Iscariot.
