The Earth was made for Human beings. There is no need for space travel.

All this talk about Moonbases and we must travel into outer space , and its our destiney to travel to other planets is pure insanity. If you people really listen to what you are saying, you will realize it is really very illogical and very unsound. You are all trying to send people to their death. Human beings will not be able to exist out in deep space.
I keep telling you people this fact.Wake up from your fantasy, come back to reality and scientific facts. Not speculation, and science fiction movies. Do the scientific analysis on deep space and interplanetary travel.!!

You know, people should have never left their fishing village. There was plenty of fish to go around, and actually the help was needed locally so why should anyone in their right mind want to sail across the horizon? waves get big out there, you could run out of water, get lost... man is not a fish, he was not made to be out on open water miles and miles from his home..... my god! how can we ask people to sail to their deaths!

No one is saying its our destiny to go to other planets, but in all reality, the Moon and Mars are well within our technological reach. We have already sent craft to both. Secondly, you don't need to send people to their deaths. People want to go to those places willingly, and actually we can send robots as well to do a lot of the heavy lifting.
I know we are making progress in Artificial Intelligence and at some point, they will become good enough to send up on their own. Dont know how long that may take. It may not be in our lifetimes, but in the future it could be the answer to exploring an entire Planet with no risk to human life at all.

Well I would suspect that the cost in money and the eventually loss of lives would beg the question is it worth it.

What other planet can sustain life with no atmosphere which would require man to make his own. Terra-forming is the concept but can it be done.

Would it be cheaper to build cities under the Ocean????

Man wants to mold Mars in its image. Will countries start claiming parts of Mars as the US of Mars or USSR or Mars. Of course corporations will want a piece of that action and claim mars as part of their corporation.

Still the other end of the equation is as the population increases how much longer can the earth provide for what everyone wants. What are the effects of man's inflicted damage to the earth with the activities that they do.Yeah it still far off but you never know and we will be all dead by then.

Oh Man,that is a bummer. Damn if you do, damn if you don't

I remembered that before Trump won, a lot of Republicans here on USMB said space travel was a complete waste of time and money. To me this proves what flip floppers Republicans are. They like whatever they are told to like. Today they like spending lots of money on space travel. Why? Is it because Elon Musk is going to get paid?

I like space travel and think it's important but this smells like Dick Chaney and Haloburton to me. Today it's Elon, Space X and Twitter.

It is mans nature to explore. Space is the next frontier.
Space is a waste of time, there's zero prospect of living on Mars, aside from that there's nowhere to go. The nearest star is 3 light years away so is simply inaccessible to humans, no technology exists to help, nothing in science offers us any prospect whatsoever of going anywhere.

I love a good science fiction yarn as much as anyone but it's silly to confuse fiction with fact, the entire Mars "project" is ridiculous and only uneducated American hickbillies are fooled by the hype. Note how the maga crowd are all for spending billions in public money on Musk's stupid "projects" yet hostile as hell to spending that money on Americans - you're all hypocrites, sick in the head.

I see a lot of people making statements about how it is our destiny to travel to Mars and to outer space. I have heard reports on what the zero gravity and the deep space radiation that all can damage human tissue. There is no need to travel into space. We were all forged here on the Earth. We were all created on the Earth for the Earth. Not to travel into space. It is unnatural for us to venture into space. Lets concentrate on people here on Earth and spend the billions of dollars here on Earth. Not on some space travel fantasy travel.

But the earth wasn't made for humans. Before humans, the earth was made for Dinosaurs. And before them the world was made for Trilobites. So your premise is wrong.

And in the future, when humans can't live on the planet, insects might dominate the globe.

One fact you can't deny. Eventually the earth will become uninhabitable. Or one day a meteor will hit and wipe humans out. Wouldn't it be smart to have some humans out in space so they can come back and re populate the planet once the devistation ends? Or maybe send humans to other planets that are in the goldilock zone?

For some reason, we care about the human race after we are gone. Even if we don't have kids, we want the human species to live forever. Or longer than the planet. Even the sun one day will die and when that happens, we're probably dead. But still we want to hold on to life for as long as we can.

I know you Republicans know what I'm talking about because you refuse to kill people who are dying. You say "life is precious even someone dying and suffering, should continue to live and suffer, because life is that precious"

So I know you want humans to live on for as long as they can. Even if you say you don't. On some level you must.

What are you against his freedom to discredit the space travel fantasy?

3 years or so ago Republicans said we need to stop wasting money on space travel. Today, with Elon and Trump pushing space travel, they are all about space travel. So long as it's Elon who's getting paid to do it. I'm sure Trump gets a kickback too.

As a kid - 1960s - I loved "space" and in fact that is what led me to study science and engineering and electronics, it was deeply interesting to me growing up in Britain.

Today space is totally boring, despite all the news and hype that's generated very little of it is actually truly interesting any more.

This is an interesting episode of a somewhat eccentric British show, it tells the same story how the future used to be exciting but no longer is.

The reality is for man to survive he has to get off of this rock. That means space exploration.

More technology is developed, faster, for space, than for war. A rarity. And no one need die for that technological development.

Yeah an asteroid hit can end all life on the planet. That's why man needs to develop space travel so we can get off before that happens.

Feel free to watch the rock land on your head. I will try to blow it up, or move it aside.

Then we won't survive, that's the reality, better face it.
More technology is developed, faster, for space, than for war. A rarity. And no one need die for that technological development.
The laws of nature cannot be changed, there's nowhere to go, humans cannot live on any planet in this solar system except earth and that's slowly being made uninhabitable.

You fools make me laugh, you dismiss pollution and climate change and population growth as anything to worry about and your reason for that is "we can live on mars" what a fucking dufus.

Nah. I don't care if you quitters die. That's what you have always done. But those of us with energy and courage will do better without you.

Do you know what the word "impossible" means?
That's what you have always done.
I have?

So facts don't matter here, only delusions, OK I understand you now, like I said nobody's going to live anywhere else, there is no escape, no life support pod or anything.

You recently claimed to know "more" than I do about cosmology, that was a joke as is your latest excursion into space travel, utterly unhinged, comic book stuff.

Nothing is impossible. Quitters quit, because that's what you do.

Every day people do what was once considered impossible. Just a 150 years ago the idea that man would fly in something other than a balloon was considered impossible.

A mere 100 years ago the very thought of travelling to the Moon was considered the stuff of Jules Verne fantasy.

And now we have you people, saying that interstellar travel is impossible.

Want to know the common thread throughout all of these little essays?

YOU, are wrong. And your type always has been.

The radiation on Mars, is rated as very deadly. That is point one. There is no water there. Point two. Why spend all those billions of USD dollars, for a trip that may wind up as a suicide mission for the entire crew, that NASA, may select for the Boone Doggle journey?!! , Get it Got.??!! Don't go there, a Mars mission will be a big waste of the Taxpayers money.!!

Not really. There is water on Mars at the Poles, and the technology development to get there will have enormous impact for those of us left on Earth.

The Earth was made for Human beings. There is no need for space travel.

It is exactly the other way---

We were made to fit the Earth. All life here sprang from the Earth, for the Earth, to fit the Earth.

But other than for sheer challenge of exploration, we need to explore space not only for resources and knowledge, but to see if we can manage a way of living on Mars (because Mars is really the only/best choice of elsewhere to live), because it is a /certainty/ that somewhere in the future, another 8-9 mile wide impactor is going to hit us again and wipe out nearly all life again, including most certainly--- us.

You would live in subterranean installations.

There is no water there.
Mars has polar ice caps and very likely vast permafrost deep under the surface. You can plainly see one of the polar caps here in this photo of it I took in 2003.

Already answered in a previous post. Basically, what your point is, is that there be dragons beyond the horizon and if we sail too far out to sea, we will fall off the edge of the Earth.

Five years later and you are still a panicky idiot.
