'The dictionary definition of fascism': Conservative columnist condemns Donald Trump's MAGA 'cult'

As Republicans have held the presidentship for 28 years and the Dems for 22 years how can you blame everything on Any ONE PARTY? They are suppose to balance each other, in the better interest of ALL of us.

Doing what they're supposed to do and what they actually do are two different things.

I’ve never suggested we need a small government. I have suggested we need a smaller, more properly focused government.

Helping people is a wonderful and laudable pursuit when one chooses to do so. Not so much when it is forced from the pocketbooks and paychecks of the citizenry by a government that has no legitimate mandate or power to legislate or spend on such activities in its founding document.

How do you read " promoting the general welfare"?

‘William Saletan, a writer for the conservative website The Bulwark, defends President Joe Biden’s anti-MAGA use of the term “semi-fascism” in an article published on September 1.

“Republicans are furious over President Biden’s recent remarks linking Donald Trump and his supporters to ‘semi-fascism,’” Saletan writes. “For days, they’ve been all over TV and social media, denouncing Biden’s use of the F-word. But Biden was right. Many of the ideas and tactics deployed by Trump and his apologists, including those who decry Biden’s comparison, fit the dictionary definition of fascism.”

Saletan stresses that refusing to accept democratic election results, which is what Trump and his followers did after the 2020 election, is an “authoritarian” act.

“A stickler might say that an attempt to overturn an election isn’t really fascist unless it involves the use of state power or mob violence, but Trump and his allies tried to use both,” Saletan explains. “Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s right-hand man in several abuses of power, says it’s Biden, not Trump, who runs America like ‘a damned dictatorship.’ But in December 2020, after the Electoral College had certified Biden’s election, Giuliani — at Trump’s direction — phoned the acting deputy secretary at the Department of Homeland Security to ask whether DHS could seize voting machines from states. Then, at Trump’s January 6th rally on the Ellipse, Giuliani exhorted the crowd: ‘Let’s have trial by combat!’”

Saletan adds, “Giuliani didn’t just help to incite the attack on the Capitol. To this day, he continues to whitewash it and excuse the perpetrators.”’

It's a RINO site.

We were never perfect, but it seems that this push to "Make America great again" is what is causing the UNITED states to be divided & filled with hate.
Horseshit. Dim scum are the cause. Americans have had their fill of your shit.

How do you read " promoting the general welfare"?
I read it as a general clause which is then further clarified and defined by the seventeen SPECIFIC ITEMS listed later on in the Section.

I also read the entire Section as referring to the Welfare and Defense of the NATIONAL ENTITY (The United States of America), not individual citizens.

William Saletan is a closet progressive masquerading as a conservative. He has pretty much always been in the less radical traditions of William Raspberry, Maureen Dowd, Michael Kinsley, etc. He has always been a strong anti-Trumper and frequently takes on conservative institutions for their failure to support progressive initiatives. I last took him on when he tried to paint Christianity's failure to become a subdivision of progressivism as 'un-Christian.'

That he would support Biden's 'fascist' characterizations of Patriots is typical Saletan.

You want the poor and elderly.. the single mother.. the disabled American to pay you back?
That wasn't the question, dumbass. However, if you want to give them all your money, no one is stopping you.

Good to hear from a critical thinker... instead of the hysterics.
