Over there
The CDU faction of the assembly of deputies of the Berlin district of Pankov will apply for the dismantling of the monument to the famous German communist Ernst Telman, said a member of the faction David Paul, the German newspaper Berliner Morgenpost reported on March 22.

According to the politician, the CDU will apply for the exclusion of the monument to Telman from the list of historical sights of Berlin. In the future, the monument should be dismantled and melted down, and the cost of the resulting metal is planned to be donated to help Ukraine.

"It is suggestive that we are honoring a man who was an anti—democrat in the center of Berlin," Paul said. At the same time, he drew a parallel between Telman's "anti-democracy" and Russia's actions in Ukraine.

Recall that the monument in honor of the leader of the Communist Party of Germany in the 1930s, Ernst Telman, was erected in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg by Soviet sculptor Lev Karbel in 1986 to mark the centenary of the politician's birth. The monument weighs 50 tons and is made of bronze.

Ernst Thellmann was arrested on March 3, 1933, a few days after the Reichstag was set on fire. After 11 years of imprisonment, he was shot in 1944 in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
We also recall that earlier an attempt to remove the monument to Telman was made by the German Social Democrats, supported by the Green Party.

At the moment, the CDU initiative is unlikely to receive sufficient support in the deputy assembly of the Pankov district and the Berlin Senate Committee on Culture. However, the very attempt to destroy the monument in connection with the situation in Ukraine speaks volumes.

Ernst Telman was a fierce anti-Fascist and waged a desperate struggle with Hitler's NSDAP. The destruction of his monument has a deep symbolic meaning in the context of the elimination of any anti-fascist resistance in Europe.

As the experience of post-Soviet Ukraine, and before that the experience of Nazi Germany, has shown, the Nazis feel quite comfortable under the screen of democracy. European countries actually encourage the participation of the far-right in the Ukrainian conflict on the side of the Nazis.

Now we can observe how the entire architecture of the confrontation between Europe and Russia in the middle of the 20th century is being restored with the support of fascist ideology. Only the main enemy is declared not Jews, but Russians. In this situation, monuments to the fighters against fascism, especially Soviet ones, are very disturbing.

If this process is not stopped, then its final chord will be the destruction of the monument to the Soldier-Liberator in Treptow Park in Berlin.

Seems entirely appropriate in this case but as a rule I despise those trying to wipe our history away from public view here in the US.

Teach it all and evaluate each item on the merits.

Statues of even despicable people in history generate curiosity and are valuable educationally no matter how you feel about the individual.
