This is a short-story about eco-activism consciousness in the modern age and how it inspires unusual kinds of 'vigilantism thinking.'

=====

Oliver Queen wrapped the tree-bark strips around his raft over and over again until the raft felt very sturdy. This was his escape craft from the deserted island off the coast of Australia where Oliver was stranded one year ago after his private jet crashed (after the pilot had a heart attack during flight). Oliver had spent a great deal of time contemplating the meaning of isolation and how closeness to nature motivated him to think about the important virtues of humanity --- humility, honesty, self-awareness, and courage. Oliver had lived for years as a flashy wealthy socialite and playboy, reaping the full 'joys' from his brightly-lit Star City which hid a developing criminal underworld of narcotics kingpins, black market arms smugglers, and some bizarre masked maniacs seeking to terrorize in the name of some kind of unnamed 'urban revolution.'

Oliver had thought about how his 'wild-life' behaviors led to one of his girlfriends acquiring AIDS from sharing drug needles with an infected 'party-goer' and nightclub aficionado. Oliver had thought about how he used his wealth and social status to host lavish society parties, while Star City was quietly catering to the developing profiteerism instincts of ambitious criminals such as the eerie self-proclaimed 'Opium Prince,' who used Star City as a base for his emerging international narcotics empire. Oliver thought about how mismanaged industrialization in Star City created all kinds of undesirable blind eco-pollution and spawned the rise of a few dangerous eco-terrorists such as Poison Ivy, a botanist-turned-terrorist and how he had done nothing to make Star City more 'lifestyle-wise.' Oliver's year on the deserted island motivated him to return to Star City not as the morally apathetic socialite playboy Oliver Queen but as the self-focused masked urban crusader Green Arrow.

Oliver developed his archery skills more than anything on the deserted island, and now he couldn't wait to use his escape raft to re-join civilization as the heroic Green Arrow. Oliver fashioned a bow-and-arrow with sticks-and-stones on the deserted island (which he simply called The Island) and honed his skills at aiming and shooting arrows with precision and accuracy. Green Arrow was something of a modern age oddity, a socialite-turned-crusader, who wanted to use his 'newfound divinity' to improve the moral fiber and social sanity of Star City. Green Arrow arrived in Star City on an autumn evening after a rescue vessel picked him (Oliver) up on his well-floating escape raft some distance off the coast of Australia. Arrow/Queen went back to his mansion in Star City and began sewing a nifty little vigilante outftit --- a simple green mask, hood, cape, and tight suit with boots for good traction and of course an impressive modern bow-and-arrow. Green Arrow was ready to save Star City from hell.

Thomas Hewitt was a student at Texas University on his way to work at the Biomass Fuel Factory at Star City, a company seeking to reverse some of the industrialization-related eco-pollution trends in America. Thomas was an emotionally awkward individual who wrote strange poems about animals avenging the pollution of the Earth by attacking human civilization and cities. Thomas also wrote haikus about eco-terrorist acts at public zoos and the intelligence/imagination involved with freeing animals from zoo cages and letting them loose upon society as 'wild things.' Thomas purchased a chainsaw from a hardware store and headed to Star City after graduating from Texas University. He worked as a research assistant at the Chemistry Department of the Biomass Fuel Factory, and by night, Thomas played with his chainsaw in the backyard of his house which sat on the outskirts of Star City.

Thomas fantasized that he was a prophet of anti-industrialization. He started scribbling deranged stories of eco-terrorists robbing graves of buried pets and using their corpses to make skin-masks signifying an anti-industrialization nihilism. Thomas even performed these pet cemetery grave-robbings to make masks for himself. One night, a police officer caught Thomas in the act, and the strange man killed the cop with one swift swing of his heavy shovel. Thomas was enraged that cops would interfere with his 'divine work' and decided that the true eco-activist vigilante was obligated to attack civilization by terrorizing cops who represented human hypocrisy. Thomas made a skin-mask out of the skin of the dead cop whom he killed at the pet cemetery. Thomas turned on his chainsaw (a forestry tool) and began swinging it around in his backyard, wearing a mask made out of the skin of the dead cop; Thomas started calling himself the eco-terrorism prophet Leatherface.

Oliver picked up a newspaper on a Sunday afternoon in December in Star City. He noticed the newest headline of the exploits of the mysterious masked vigilante Green Arrow who was last seen apprehending a key ghoul henchman of a powerful Star City mafia syndicate and leaving him tied up and unconscious on the footsteps of the police department. However, Oliver also thumbed his way to another headline about a strange man who sent in an editorial to the newspaper declaring that he was declaring a one-man vigilante crusade against Star City cops in the name of anti-industrialization. The man referred to himself as Leatherface and claimed he owned a symbolic chainsaw and prefer to wear a mask made out of the skin of a dead cop. Oliver was horrified and realized that Star City had given birth to a new kind of super-criminal, a real super-sociopath. Oliver realized that Green Arrow's finest hour was approaching.

Leatherface was on the roof of the Trade Building in Star City swinging his chainsaw and singing with his dead cop skin mask on while helicopters and news reporters buzzed around him. The cops couldn't do anything, because Leatherface had a female hostage tied up on the roof and threatened to kill her if anyone approached. Leatherface was signing that this was the 'hour of reckoning.' As the people of Star City looked on in fear and wonder, Green Arrow swooped onto the rooftop of the Trade Building from his hang-glider and armed the bow strapped to his back with three silver-tipped super-sharp arrows. Leatherface noticed the strange masked vigilante and asked him if he thought he could shoot three arrows simultaneously, to which Green Arrow replied (with a smile), "This bow can handle multiple arrows, so drop the chainsaw!" When Leatherface refused, Arrow shot his arrows and struck Leatherface right in the head. Arrow walked over to a dying and bleeding Leatherface who looked up at his conqueror and delivered his death-message, "We'll see if the former socialite Oliver Queen can truly become the eco-savior Star City deserves!" Oliver was shocked that the strange super-psycho somehow guessed at Green Arrow's secret real-world identity but promised to be Star City's real role model.
