Actually, Taiwan is a part of China. And at bit more than half of their Parliament are pro-continental. I mean, they see what happened in Hong Kong (which was joined peacefully) and what happened in Ukraine (which was defended by the West). So, the most important question their decision-makers ask themselves is not "Should we ask America to defend us?", coz the answer is already known. What do they ask themselves is "What can we do to prevent Americans from defending us?". Now they scheduled impeachment of their "pro-American" President, because he is, welll, too pro-American. And if they find somewhere 16 additional votes - Taiwan may rejoin with China as soon as this year.
