The first this year to score 50, and he did it in only 62 games! Matching the fastest since Lemieux in 1996 in the same number of games (Gretzky has the insane record of 50 in 39 games in a poor goalie era).

Matthews was robbed of three 50 goal seasons in a row and maybe a 60 in a season if not for covid. He leads the league by one goal, but he missed 5 games, so others played more games.

Leafs all time season record is 54, Matthews has this in his sights and he's only in his 5th year I believe. The guy is a beast and plays two way hockey, no floating for him.

Auston Matthews anytime goal scorer was a popular prop bet once again on Thursday night.

As he’s done over and over this season, Matthews delivered again.

The Toronto Maple Leafs led the Winnipeg Jets 5-3 late in regulation when goalie Eric Comrie headed to the Winnipeg bench.

After being stopped on his first five shots of the game, Matthews found the empty net for his 50th goal, becoming only the fourth player in franchise history and the first in 28 years to hit that mark in a single season.

Anyone that went to the game hoping that they would see Matthews score 50 in person went home happy.

Anyone that bet on Matthews anytime goal scorer at -130 went home happy as well.

With the goal, Matthews once again pulled ahead of Leon Draisaitl in a thrilling Rocket Richard Trophy race.

Next up, Draisaitl will get his chance to respond when the Edmonton Oilers host the St. Louis Blues in another crucial game in the NHL Western Conference playoff race.

One hell of a skater, eh?

Kind of sad he got it on an empty net.

Not really, that makes up for the dismal number of power plays the Leafs receive, 3rd least in the league.

Some players feast on the PP while Matthews has to generally earn it 5v5 (though of course, he is also part of a lethal PP).

I've always thought it was silly for the NHL to count assists equally with goals in the scoring race. Especially when some assists are unrelated to the actual goal being scored (unlike in, say, basketball).

But good for this kid. Excellence must be recognized.
