Canadians and Europeans count every bar fight as an assault, every sexual assault is also counted, even if there was no rape. This gives the impression there is a lot more violent crime than in the US where common assaults aren't counted at all.

That is pure, unadulterated, bullshit. What HAS been proven however, is the British Police would count every violent action in a big apartment building as a SINGLE offense. One address, one offense, no matter that there were 18 violent crimes committed all over the whole block, by entirely different people, against entirely different victims. In the debate of crime statistics the US leads all others in accurate reporting. The one area where the law enforcement agency's DO fall down in the USA though, is in tabulating police involved killings.

On that one subject alone they seem to do a very poor job of reporting indeed. In fact, it was a local Indie publisher The Reno News and Review that led the way in trying to come to grips with that problem. D.
