Tariffs,Trade Deficits, and Import Certificates
Nation's foreign trade are per se, of no harm and often of benefit to their nation's economy. That's not true for a nation's annual trade deficits.
Unless the nation effectively enjoys “full employment” nation's tradedeficits are detrimental to their nation's numbers of jobs. Excluding such years , (such as USA's “full-war-time economy” years), USA's annual trade deficits have been, and will continue to be net detrimental to our annual GDP's. Due to each of USA's negative annual net balances of international trade, our annual GDP's were less than otherwise; (otherwise being if we hadnot suffered an annual trade deficit).
I'm opposed to the policy of tariffs, because that practice enables our government's determining winners and losers. I'm opposed to absolutely “pure” free trade, because, (similar to many absolutes) pure free trade would be net detrimental to our nation.
I'm among the proponents of our nation adopting the foreign trade policyof “Import Certificates”,(i.e. IC) as described within the Wikipedia article of that title.
