Sydney Sweeney is a pretty young lady.

There is cause and there is effect. You can't just look at one or the other. You have to look at both.

Smoking causes cancer. Here's an idea: Stop smoking.

PC/Identity Politics brought us Trumpism. Here's an idea: Stop the PC/Identity Politics.

But in reality, it may be too late now.

So, to recap: they spun a "lib backlash to Sweeney" up out of basically nothing & it provided weeks of content for the vast network of people & institutions who get money & attention by shitting on the left, convincing the billionaires that the left (not the f'ing fascists) are the real threat.
To add something to my earlier post/diatribe:

The Left figured that calling people racist, homophobe, Islamphobe, punishing people, wrecking businesses, all of that, was going to work. And I guess it did, to an extent. But only to a limited extent.

The Right, in response, figured that pointing at all of that would work. And from what I'm seeing, it looks like it has. There was a huge global appetite for this that many people didn't see. But here it is.

It didn't NEED to be anything. The tiniest spark will do. It just took a few complaints from a few random people.

Why? Because the predicate had been set LONG ago, a MILLION examples ago. The Dems own PC/Identity Politics. It's a big, fat, juicy, easy target, and now it's being used against them in spades. The slightest excuse will be used every single time, by the very people who were the targets before. And its audience is big. It's global now. Even in JAPAN:

The rise of Japan's far right was supercharged by Trump - and tourists

The Dems did that to themselves. They scoffed and laughed at the growing resentment that their actions caused, every day, every time, and now it's come back to bite them. I talked about this here 14 years ago, pre-Escalator Day, and the scoffing and laughing ensued. Okay, well, here we are. It's everywhere. The Great Pushback.
Sorry, you cannot attribute every whack comment from anyone on the internet to the Democratic Party. 🙄

But from who? And why are Dems responsible for their comments?

And like David Roberts says, why doesn't it work in reverse? There are plenty of Nazis and racists making comments every day. Is the Republican Party having to answer and defend their remarks? No. Why not?

Whether people can or they can't, they do. And they vote. The Dems can dismiss that, but dismissing it does not appear to be working.

Although, in fairness, I'm not even sure what the Dems' goal is with the PC stuff.

Holy shit. "The people" aren't making this connection. It's manufactured by rightwing media.

How in the world is that political, you might ask? It's because that otherwise benign commericial that she's in sparked YET ANOTHER racially-charged, politically-charged firestorm that originated on the Left. I wish the entire Left would read this piece in Politico today: The Sydney Sweeney Saga Shows Why Republicans Keep Winning -- written by a Democrat and Harris campaign worker.

For the blissfully uninitiated: The actress Sydney Sweeney was the face of a new ad for American Eagle where they say she has “good jeans.” This is obviously a play on “good genes,” which to most people was a reference to how she is good looking, and to a small cadre of extremely online lefty posters and SEO-chasing online media outlets was a reference to Nazism and eugenics. The right made a whole thing about it, accusing Democrats of being out-of-touch scolds, and somehow Democrats have found themselves on the defensive. The episode caused confusion, consternation and a wave of Democrats performatively affirming that yes, they too think Sydney Sweeney is beautiful. Welcome to 2025.

You might be wondering why anybody cares about this. But here’s the thing: The fact that this moment became a thing at all — that a stupid pun could metastasize into a full-blown political moment — says something real about the media ecosystem we’re all trapped in. And it says even more about why Democrats keep losing the culture war, and with it, the narrative war that inevitably shapes who wins elections.

Does the middle class care about this story? Does the working class care about this story? I doubt it.

The Dems are past just dropping the PC/Identity Politics shit and re-focusing on the Middle Class. It should APOLOGIZE for the all horseshit it has unloaded on the American public over the last couple of decades, ADMIT that it has gone too far, and THEN re-focus on the Middle Class.

Nice try Cheese. Throwing a bone does not offset 10,000 unprovoked TDS rants.//

My Dad puts it this way:

"The hit dog always hollers first."

Besides, you've been labeling everyone on the right for the actions of a few for the past 15 years. You have no place to act like a victim.

This is the endgame of the "Anyone to the right of Mitt Romney is a Nazi" mentality, but applied to the left.

That's the predicate, that's the playing field. MAGA media specializes in inflating everything to a fever pitch. It has since the day Limbaugh went national. That's why I don't understand why the Dems are so willing to just play into it.

I know I'm not going to convince you of the role that PC/Identity Politics has played, and is playing. To me, it's clear as day, and they just keep telling the country that it's their core issue (Woke! Woke! Woke!).

I don't see either end of this moving any time soon.

Why am I spending so much time dissecting this silly & ultimately meaningless episode?

Because, friends, hear me: this is the template for the last 10 years of US politics. This is the US politics in a nutshell. This is how it all works.

The whole "woke" hysteria & backlash? "Cancel culture"? It was all this! The controversy over bahn mi in the college cafeteria. The HR guidance that instructed people to say "pregnant people." The trans girl who wanted to swim on the HS team.

These are not things Dems chose to talk about!

The template is, the right drives this dumb shit into the conversation, the reactionary centrists take the baton and push it into mainstream media, and then everyone asks, "why are Dems focusing on this stuff?"

They aren't, you credulous ******* dipshits! They didn't do this!

If you are asking "why are Dems talking about Sweeney instead of egg prices?" you are either a) an absolutely hopeless mark for grifters, or b) one of those grifters.

For "Sweeney," substitute any one of the dozens of culture-war fights over the last decade. The right wants these, not the left.

This all seems quite obvious to me -- it's the same goddamn cycle running over & over again -- but what baffles & infuriates me is how many Dems, even Dems of good faith, fall for it. "Yes, we suck, yes, we're focused on silly woke stuff, yes, shit on us more." Get a ******* spine.

Anyway, to summarize/conclude: this silly Sweeney cycle, wherein a largely imaginary lib backlash leads to weeks of everyone shitting on Dems, is the entire last decade of US politics in miniature. Dems are forced to answer for any & every rando that anyone can find online ...

... while Republicans are never, ever forced to answer for the fact that their ranks are ridden with open nazis, racists, sexual predators, and thugs.

There's a machine, funded by billionaires, running this scam over & over again. Maybe stop taking the bait. </fin>

Bullshit. You said "These are not things Dems chose to talk about!"

Its all they ever talk about.

It appears that Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers' administration proposed using gender-neutral language in the state's budget recommendation, replacing terms like "mother" with "inseminated person" and "father" with terms like "parent who gave birth to the child" or "natural parent" in certain sections of the state law

Evidently the ads have had a negative effect on the Company. Foot traffic down 9%.

Footfall traffic reportedly decreased by 9% year over year at American Eagle stores for the week starting August 3, 2025. This is the second week the apparel company has experienced traffic declines following the launch of the controversial Sydney Sweeney jeans ad campaign.

5 ridiculous post by Synthaholic above back to back almost all false or flat out lying. Yet no one challenges? Not even disagree button?

NYT is RW? RW media (hey foam at mouth TDS, there is no highly popular RW media dummy).

These boards chock full of Stain non-stop with lying, provoking irritating trolling posters. Making it difficult for decent honest posters (like me) to co-exist. That's all//

BoardStain never get any wiser as they don't want to admit they are wrong. Or too stupid to realize how wrong they are every post.

Mac&Cheese with occasionsl Fluffing about the edges, desperately trying to appear 1%normal.

No it didn't. Not even close. Backlash from the Right to having a Black president brought us Trump. Trump only ran because of Obama. It's always been the racism.
Nothing like proving Mac’s point just a few posts later.

Correlation does not equal causation.

and 9% for something as derived as a "foot traffic" analysis is probably within the margin of error.

Trump was the backlash against Marxism, and all the ridiculous rulings that support Marxist goals for America: disintegration of the family, constant racial and gender division, the many anti-religion and anti-capitalist laws, and the bankrupting of our country through open borders and the climate change hoax, and 0bamacare/

The hallmark of Chimpy wasn't his race; it was the Marxism he was recruited by his handlers to promote.
