Senators Spector and Feingold fight over Marriage amendment

I thought it was pretty interesting.

Democrats complained that bringing up the amendment is a purely political move designed to appeal to the GOP's conservative base in this year of midterm elections.

So?

What's their point - "Republicans hadn't ought to do that"? Advancing a proposal that might meet with the public's approval is somehow "not cricket"?
