That may be authoritarian government, but it's not big government. Obamacare is big government because it creates hundreds of new departments, causes tens of thousands of bureaucrats to get hired, and spends $trillions of dollars. How much does the DOMA legislation cost the taxpayers? Not a single dime.
I don't agree with that logic at all. "Big Government" refers to
both (1) physical size of the federal government (and amount it costs to run), and (2) the reach, authority, and lawmaking power of the federal government. It refers interchangeably to both those things, and saying it can only refer to one and not the other is incorrect.
It is a truism that the larger a government becomes the more authoritarian it becomes.
Just look how many government bureucracies have armed agent to enforce their rules. At no time since the totalitarian regimes of the WWII era, has there been such an authoritarian mentality within our government. Here are the agencies allowed to be armed on flights within the US.
