There was no way Takei would have come out in the mid 1960's. It would have meant death to his career. However, if I understand it, by the time the first full feature Star Trek movie came out, everybody knew...and didn't care.

If the feud is real, Shatner did not destroy Takei. We know people destroy others because they can or are in powerful fiefdoms. Takei had a career where he survived pretty well. At some point it becomes stupidity. Takei screwed himself over as Mako took the brass ring and ran away with it in that era.
