WASHINGTON (AP) — The Education Department will begin collection next month on student loans that are in default, including the garnishing of wages for potentially millions of borrowers, officials said Monday.

Currently, roughly 5.3 million borrowers are in default on their federal student loans.

The Trump administration ’s announcement marks an end to a period of leniency that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. No federal student loans have been referred for collection since March 2020, including those in default. Under President Joe Biden, the Education Department tried multiple times to give broad forgiveness of student loans, only to be stopped by courts.

“American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said.

Good. Time to pay up, deadbeats!

And most of them vote Democrat.

Minorities and women have the highest levels of student debt.

More middle class shitting on being done by the GOP. They should arrest for profit college presidents as well then.

The people racking up $200k in school debt for a degree in Lesbian Aztec basketweaving aren't usually middle class.

Those parents make their kids get real degrees, like accounting, engineering, or at least something like finance.

I’ll take “making shit up“ for $1,000 Alex.

It's a joke, but like most jokes it has a spot of truth to it.

I paid back my Student loans in full.

Should I get re-imbursed if these people get off the hook, via money I pay for via taxes?

I paid $60k for a graduate degree from UMich. I lose nothing if someone on hard times doesn’t get sued by the government to garnish their wages.

Those are decades old dollars. Probably double now.

Sorry, but we end of up paying for it. Pay for your own shit, it's not that hard.

You're ahead of the curve but it doesn't hurt to be progressive on government actions needed!

Shut up. You don’t pay for shit. You are $30 Trillion in debt. You owe at least $11T in war expenses and war equipment.

Get the Feds out of the student loan business and change the law to allow student loan debt to be discharged through bankruptcy.

If Universities want to loan kids $100K to get a degree in ethno-gender studies, they can put themselves on the hook to get paid back.

I don't get Sleepy Joe saying he wants to forgive student loans. I mean those folks are the best ones in a postion to pay thier bills. If he wanted to give away $$$ for education why not help the poor people ???

I disagree with Joe on mass forgiveness. However I am fine with need based forgiveness.

Is it against your religion to pay your debts?

I have no debt. We are talking about hardship forgiveness not free shit. I am not for mass wiping out of loans but I am for a reasonable approach to hardships.
