A lot of Jews immigrated to the U.S., and found the local culture a lot more open than Europe's, and many of them were just assimilated into the mainstream, same as many other peoples. It isn't until the mass immigration waves of the 1880's that you get huge numbers of immigrants who could find entire neighborhoods where immigrants wouldn't have to assimilate or learn a new language and live isolated and segregated from other peoples. Many of these old neighborhoods are still segregated, others finally disappeared after WW II forced a lot of integration on such communities.
