It's only a hamburger sammich if they use sliced bread from a loaf. Not a roll as the round flat meat is the burger in German. So a hamburger sammich would be on normal bread; not a roll.
So a hotdog sammich would be on bread; NOT a roll. Here we have a common event often used for fundraising called a sausage sizzle but it uses only ONE slice of bread and a single snag (sausage). Add onions and sauce (BBQ or Tomato) as desired...probably Ketchup in the US. So it's a sausage sanga (sammich) or just a sausage sizzle.

So a sammich if on sliced bread and a hot dog if in a roll.

I've never heard of a hotdog or hamburger regarded as a sandwich but technically they are.

Funny thing is if you replace the hamburger meat with fish or chicken it suddenly turns into a fish or chicken sandwich.

Whatever you put on a hotdog bun is just referred to as to it's contents, a hotdog, footlong, half-smoke, etc.

No, because the bun is wrong. To be a true sandwich, you have to have bread. And hotdog lies in a submarine-like bun, which does not resemble bread.

So does that mean that a Wendy's burger is not a burger? They are not round.
I mostly make my burgers square, but they are still burgers nonetheless. I make them square because I just cut squares into a tray of ground beef.

For me it's a most efficient burger making method that minimizes manipulation of the meat. The more you mess with the meat, the tougher it gets.

The only time I make round burgers is when I make smash burgers. My burger smasher is round. Smash burgers have more surface area to contact the griddle, thus more Maillard reaction.
