Two Florida men were arrested in Mount Prospect Monday for allegedly stashing over $5 million worth of marijuana in a semi-trailer full of carrots.
Abraham Garcia-Acosta, 44, lied about the contents inside the vehicle and told Cook County Sheriff’s officers he was in town “to see a *****” when he was stopped for a minor traffic violation, Assistant State’s Attorney Kilby Macfadden said.

Garcia-Acosta and the passenger in the semi-trailer, Diego Diaz-Perez, 49, were arrested when the 1,173 pounds of cannabis was discovered in 80 plastic bags underneath the load of carrots, Macfadden said. The street value of the marijuana was estimated at $5.3 million, according to Macfadden.

Before the arrest, officers observed a black Isuzu engaged in suspicious activity at an Elk Grove Village Days Inn, Macfadden said.
The officers followed the rental car to an Elk Grove Village Motel 6 where they saw Garcia-Acosta exit the semi-trailer and enter the Isuzu, Macfadden said.

After a few minutes, Garcia-Acosta got back into the semi-trailer before he drove off and was arrested in Mount Prospect, Macfadden said.
The driver of the Isuzu was not charged with any crime.

Judge Ramon Ocasio III ordered Garcia-Acosta and Diaz-Perez held on $15,000 cash bail Tuesday for unlawful delivery of cannabis.
