Error - Visualizing the Americas
"In 1954, the CIA overthrew the democratically elected government of Guatemala, violently reversing the progressive policies of the civilian governments. This coup was undertaken at the behest of the United Fruit Company, and it ushered in a thirty-six-year civil war that claimed the lives of approximately 200,000 civilians."
Above is how much the operation to stage a coup in Guatemala costed taxpayers....Fact of the matter is, US corporations used many countries in Central America as their personal plantations -- and they made sure there was a puppet government always in power to help them do it -- even if they had to install that government themselves....Guatemala is the perfect example....When the people there voted to regain control of their own resources -- US businesses had the CIA kick that government out and put in their own....Imagine how freaked out we get over the financial/trade influence we believe China has over us -- many people in this country literally hate the Chinese because of the undue influence we believe they have.....can you imagine if China literally did to us what the US did to so many countries in Central America -- think that would go over well?? You think there won't be lasting effects??
Often times when living in the US; one can become kind of narcissistic when it comes to topics like this....topics like how our foreign policy thru out the decades effected others outside of the US...there is a famous saying "Chickens coming home to roost" -- and a lot of the hand-wringing and bickering over illegal immigration is in large part due to chickens of this type of colonial capitalism coming home to roost or in other words; our own foreign policy actions coming back to haunt us.
