Sure they do, where feasible, as a supplemental form of power. I mean, the Sun alone is a source of about a billion billion times more energy than we could ever need, and wind power taps onto yet more of the same indirectly.

Where the problem arises is relying on them as our only source of power.

Instead of trying to /replace/ conventional power with green energy (just yet), one way that might work would be to provide for as much power as we minimally need from green sources if we can, then supplement that with additional power as needed to meet greater loads from nuclear, hydro, coal, etc.
