One problem is that "conservatism" doesn't know what it is conserving anymore. If it is "conserving" corporate capitalism, it is basically the same as the liberal global order. If it is trying to conserve traditional Christian religion, it is conserving a feudal system of thought rooted in ancient tribal/slave societies and utter despair and revulsion toward life itself in those times. (Religion today serves other interests.) If "Conservatives" are trying to conserve the Enlightened revolutionary traditions that created the U.S. republic, they are still defending a system really designed for a pre-industrial society.

Democrats can be conservatives too! Jeffersonian and Jacksonian "democracy" all had their own conservative features. Even "progressive" movements, even working-class movements, were often racist, anti-immigrant, chauvinist.

Roosevelt Democrats introduced crucial social-democratic reforms. They were not so conservative, but like Lincoln they did what they had to do to face practical problems and win wars. Their successes made the country a great world power. That "tradition" and those successes were Republican and Democratic Party initiated, by turns. Today's right populist MAGA movement, along with neo-liberal imperialism, shares a common conservative nationalist consensus for a strong military presence based on hundreds of foreign bases protecting United States global interests and empire.
