It is a direct result of corporate farming here and abroad.
Corporations will do anything to produce higher yields - regardless of health hazards. The reason these heavy metals are in the crops is because for decades corporations used pesticides that contained arsenic. Blatant disregard for human health for generations. Arsenic never decomposes. Never. The only way to remove it would be to remove several feet of the topsoil.

Arsenic occurs naturally in soil in varying amounts. Pollution from mining and such doesn't help.

For many years after contact with North America, Europeans were afraid to eat potatoes because they were considered poisonous. Cooking and most importantly peeling potatoes can remove the arsenic to safe levels. Bad idea to eat uncooked potatoes.
