That is only because about 30 years ago, the Left discovered that they could use late night shows as a more valuable tool than wide entertainment; they co-opted it into another political tool designed to keep the leftwing base happy believing that all people think just like them and that everyone else is just a fringe outsider.

That is why networks keep crap like SNL and others on the air despite failing metrics, they deem them an investment for a cause.
