Nothing new, I had a personal experience with this visiting someone in the hospital the other day.
Everyone in the room except for my husband and I were on their cell phones (there were 4 others in the room).

What used to be considered impolite has become typical behavior. I don't think it's an addiction. Sadly, preferring to "talk" to someone with your hand gadget has become preferable to acknowledging the human beings right next to you.

I think some of it is short attention span. I'm beginning to think the entire nation has attention deficit.
People just can't sit still in silence or be focused on one thing.
Visiting someone and having your entire attention on those you are visiting or those around you.

It is more like, "Hi grandma, how are you today?" "Well let me telly you sonny, I just ain't right. Back hurts all the time and it is getting harder to see the TV." "Sorry to hear that grandma...................................." Oh, BTW I am doing fine."...................................................long silence............................................awkward.......................nothing to say...................................................... Well at least I am here, I think i will text my brother and see what bar he is in.

There is always something to talk about if you care and try.
I have always wanted to volunteer to go to nursing homes and just walk around and talk and visit with the elderly....

I'd like to ask them questions about life, what they feel they have learned - such a valuable resource, and unfortunately our country treats them like trash.....

I don't have a smart phone active and I don't have any grandparents to ignore...

But you're here.... but if you are single, I guess you are not ignoring anyone....
I hate my phone, it's hard to type on. And if I'm out and about, I honestly would rather be focusing on what I'm doing either in my travels or with other people.

I still say it's an addiction.
People panic if they don't have their phone.

At work my coworkers live on their I- phones & Facebook.

I don't.....although I check the news at work frequently for a few minutes, unless it is of a night and I work a Gate.

I don't Facebook at all, use to until about five years ago; and I was a member for about two years.

I don't carry my phone with me, except when I travel. It stays home.

Some people I work with are on their I- phones 8 or 9 hours out of a 12 hour shift , or are on the computer & Facebook...... even on hectic day shifts . Some people I work with live for Facebook.

Social media has some people hooked.

Supposively at Gate 3, our internet in the future weeks is going to be limited as to the websites we can visit.
