Usually getting beaten, molested, neglected, abused and or socially isolated. But seriously, many many kids abuse animals, for many reasons, and only a miniscule precentage become serial killers. It's a combination of factors and a lot of random shit too. Should their be counseling and some serious intervention ? Yes. Criminal charges ? No, no human being was killed. A child is being raised in a fucked up enviroment, but that can be changed and she can grow as a person if she's willing to do it and the right resources are provided.

However, when a parent tells a kid to kill a pet as punishment, that's a big problem.

It was one of the hallmarks of a famous case here not too long ago..I can't remember what it was, but I do believe the kid ended up killing his folks.
