Apparently, they have a right to recognized by Denmark.

I can see where the budget would be an issue for them - as one of the only remaining American lands still under the thumb of a European colonial power.

Fortunately, they have another option besides declaring independence and starving. They could declare independence and voluntarily join the United States as a territory. We would have it's strategic location and be able to protect the fragile culture of the Inuit, and they would have U.S. funding, which is always more generous than that of Denmark.

They have not harvested the 31 billion barrels of oil they own, likely due to pressure from Gretta Thunburg and other Nordic anti-oil activists. Under the wing of Uncle Sam, they need not fear the neo-Luddites of the left. Their people can be provided with oil dividends similar to those Alaskans get from the Alaska Sovereingn Wealth Fund. They could use that money to send their children to college on the mainland.

I don't see a downside, and Trump is setting the table for this to happen.

Not many,

So I'm sure they will want to join the U.S. of A. pretty quickly.

Meanwhile, we station troops there under a SOFA, and the Ruskies won't dare invate.

They don't want independence and just because Trump talks about buying it doesn't mean we need to discuss it.

Maybe, why not. Let the Greenlanders speak about that and make a decision. Though, it is somewhat obvious that a population with the number of a provincial town can't effectively govern a territory of that size.

Should Greenland declare Independence from Denmark?

Greenland is nearly independent from Denmark. Greenland lives under Selvstyre. With the Selvstyreloven, the Greenlandic people were officially recognized as a separate ethnic group for the first time.

Nevertheless their founding nation Denmark helps Greenland in many ways. Especially in foreign policy. Donald Trump has to deaclare war on Denmark if he likes to invade Greenland. And such a declaration of war means automatically a decalataion of war on the whole EU, because Denmark is a member of the EU. And in this case also the NATO has to defend Greenland against the USA.

No wonder that Donald Trump likes to destroy the NATO. This kills two birds with one stone: His good friend Putin has no problem to invade Europe or to destroy Europe with nukes - and Greenlanders will hardly be able to do anything about the theft of their own land.

Their problem - not the problem of anyone else. 85% of the Greenlanders do not like to become a "member" of the USA.

We need to discuss about because Donald Trump is the leader (=Führer) of extremely stupid people in and of the USA. His politics is totally uncalculable - specially because it is not politics. It takes a very long time to build trust. Ruining trust happens in a flash. And egocentrists like Donald Trump and Elon Musk can unfortunately be "trusted" with anything. Including anything bad imaginable.

That's why they need Denmark, aka to be a part of Denmark, and with a Trump around, even more then ever.

However - I am sure China could also solve that issue easily :)

Greenland will be ideal for more Bio Labs , Underground Bases and early warning systems .

It is there at a likely bargain price .

Of course Trumpfy wants it . Who would not if the price was only 30 pieces of Silver ?

Key Natural Resources in Greenland

  1. Rare Earth Elements (REEs) Greenland has some of the world’s largest deposits of rare earth elements, critical for manufacturing electronics, renewable energy technologies, and defence systems. ...
  2. Minerals Greenland is rich in other valuable minerals, including: ...
  3. Oil and Gas The Arctic waters around Greenland are believed to contain substantial oil and natural gas reserves. ...
  4. Marine Resources ...
  5. Hydropower ...

Well, let the people there speak. In my opinion, 'the Danish variant' is the best; but problem here is that Denmark can't exercise full sovereignty over the island because it can't offer any meaningful military protection.

It can become a sovereign nation, of course, but people there won't be able to exercise their sovereignty in full too. The territory is too big, and the population is too small. There would need to be an international agreement that guarantees security and sovereignty of the new Republic. But to make such agreement possible, a neutrality status of the island should be declared. The US will reject it right away, of course, because that would mean scrapping their military installations there.

For the US the most preferable idea is to recognize Greenland as their overseas territory. And this will be realized, if the Trump Adm decides to proceed with their Greenland idea.

Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the UK and Canada are just opposite and in reach - aka NATO. Therefore if Greenlanders would opt for independence there wouldn't be any issue regarding it's protection nor exercising it's full sovereignty.

Iceland got a population of 400,000 and no military aside from it's coastguard. And is a NATO member since 1949.

And honestly who the heck would attack Greenland in the first place?? especially since Greenland is already a full NATO member.

It's simply and only about the USA's global economic & military hegemony. aka laying their hands onto other peoples resources, and telling them what to do.

yes, some separatists must be arrested- deported to Denmark proper , Denmark must enforce its rule over Greenland, start resources extraction.

If the Ruskies were going to invade a US territory, they’d have already moved on Alaska.

You really think they’ve left Greenland alone out of fear of Denmark?

Ironically, the threat can arise inside of NATO, as this American claims show. Besides, no one knows how long NATO, at least in the contemporary shape, will exist.
