Sheriff in California refuses to enforce mask mandate, says it’s 'not backed by science'

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva is refusing to enforce the city’s reinstated mask policy.

Los Angeles County health officials announced previously this week that their mask mandate would be returning. Residents have been told to wear masks in indoor settings and large gatherings, regardless of one’s vaccination status.

Las Vegas is also talking about bullying the electorate around again with the mask nonsense. Will have to wait and see how that pans out.

Mask mandates, business closures, social distancing, and other life constraints are a manifestation of the irrational belief by career government "officials" (literally "office holders") that (a) they can solve all problems by government action, and (b) they must "do something" to combat every problem, even if that "something" is irrational or even counter-productive. If they do not "do something" they will be accused of fiddling while Rome burned or some such nonsense, and that would be impolitic.

The neurotic rush to mask wearing was debunked early on by DOCTORS who pointed out that in order to be efficacious, a mask has to be of a certain type, and sealed to the face, neither of which is actually feasible for the general public, most of which is ignorant and incompetent about even the simplest things.

For the greatest example of politicians "doing something" to solve a problem, look at the largely worthless, grotesquely inefficient, enormously costly TSA, a Federal government program that will never die, despite zero evidence that it has ever prevented a catastrophe. This is the agency that has transitioned commercial air travel from a fairly enjoyable experience to something to be dreaded.

if I recall correctly, LA city and LA county are separate entities.
The sheriff is elected by the people of LA county and not under the command of the LA mayor.
Thus, the sheriff of LA country is under no legal obligation to enforce the mandates / ordinances of LA City.
